The Market

With around 32 million people, Uzbekistan is the mostly populated country in Central Asia. Therefore, the food industry is one of the most important segments of the economy of Uzbekistan, the share of GDP is 13%. The most important crops are cotton and wheat, and fruits (apples, apricots, peaches and berries), vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes and potatoes), milk, silk and livestock are also produced in large quantities. The cultivation of cotton, traditionally the main agricultural product, has been significantly reduced, which has freed up about 170,500 hectares of land. This land will be primarily used for sowing potatoes and other vegetables, crops for fodder production, and gardening. Currently, Uzbekistan produces about 16 million tons of fruits and vegetables, the volume of which is planned to increase by another 5 million tons by 2030. This contributes to the manufacture of high quality products that are competitive in the foreign market. As a result, food products with the “Made in Uzbekistan” brand are already being sold in more than 80 countries around the world. In 2020, the export of fruit juices amounted to 14.9 thousand tons.  In turn, foreign exchange earnings increased six fold. The positive impact on growth during the pandemic was also affected by the decree of the head of state Shavkat Mirziyoyev “On additional measures to ensure food security, rational use of available resources and state support for agriculture during the coronavirus pandemic.” Thanks to the adoption of this document led to an increase in the cultivation and processing of fruit and vegetable products and the rate of development of the industry. Every year the number of enterprises in this industry is growing, which indicates its dynamic development.
