The Market

The Russian Federation is a "potato giant", with output third only to India and China. The average Russian consumes a hearty 130 kg of potatoes a year. The average annual potato production in the country amounts to about 29,8 million tons in 2017, which allows to fully ensure domestic consumption. The main production of potatoes is concentrated in the Central, Volga, Ural and Siberian federal districts. The harvested area for potatoes in professional enterprises reached 295,200 ha in Russia in 2017. The Province of Bryansk is located in the Central federal district. In the production of potatoes by agricultural enterprises, the Bryansk region confidently ranks first in Russia. The share of Bryansk potatoes in total production in Russia is 13.7% (24.800 ha). The total harvested area in the Central federal district amounts to 98,000 ha. By considering the annual decline in the share of private farms in total potato production in Russia, there are good prospects for rising professionalization of the sector, what requests further investments in modern technologies. The average harvest of 22 tons per hectare in Russia requires further investments to increase the effectiveness of potato production (the Bryansk region reached an average number of 35 tons per hectare in 2017).
