The Market

Poland is currently the largest potato producer in the European Union. The area of potato cultivation in Poland is over 300,000 ha and almost 10 million tons of harvest per year. For comparison, the countries of the Western European Big Five so-called the NEPD, which includes England, France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, has an overall cultivation area of 580,000. ha and production at the level of 28 million tons. The scale of production in Poland is large but its potential is much larger. In Poland (data from 2016) an intensive potato production system takes place in around 9,000  farms on the area of over 100 000 ha. Production of potatoes in the medium-input system is about 30,000 farms with an area of over 100,000 ha. Polish producers perfectly fit into global trends, we can see over a dozen large potato packaging companies for retail chains. These are Polish companies that are perfectly moving in the domestic reality and have a network of proven suppliers for today. In Poland, the line for the production of frites is currently under development in such companies as Mc Cain or Farm Frites. The demand for raw material is growing, because in Poland there is a large potential of processors such as: Mc Cain, Farm. Frites, Chio, Fritolay, Lorenz, Pepees and Fritar. The greatest pressure on the market is increasingly placed on healthy food. This is also due to the growing awareness of the consumer. The more sought after are potatoes from organic production also for export. This is a big chance for small farms producing extensively.
